DevOps: The starting point

DevOps: The starting point

Ever since its emergence, DevOps has only been progressing. Its principles, processes, practices and tools have only evolved since then. It has become such a vast culture vital to the modern day IT industry. I am always in awe of people who first start things. Ever since I started learning about DevOps, I was intrigued by its history. Let me tell you what I found.

Patrick Debois, a consultant from Belgium started working on a data center migration project. He worked closely with the application team as well as the operations team. Though these teams worked on the same project, the divide between them was large and obvious which in turn caused problems and frustration for Debois. It made him recognize the need for communication and collaboration between both the teams. This necessity was in a way, the seed of DevOps.

In 2009, a presentation named '10+ Deploys per day: Dev and Ops Cooperation at Flickr' was delivered. This presentation made the industry realize that the only sensible way to deploy applications in the future is for both the development and operations team to work together. This "way" is what we now know as DevOps.

Although Debois watched this presentation remotely, it prompted him to start a conference named "DevOpsDays" which was eventually shortened to DevOps. This session started the debate of DevOps. Tech companies eventually began adopting and implementing the DevOps culture which led to the emergence of a variety of DevOps tools we use today.

Overtime, a number of such "DevOpsDays" conferences are now held all over the world. I am starting my own version of it where I will post and discuss about DevOps and topics related to DevOps. Follow for a regular dose of #DevOpsDayswithKajal. Feel free to connect and discuss DevOps with me!
